CoinHive is a JavaScript based cryptocurrency miner that website operators and cyberattackers abused to mine Monero in users' browsers without consent. Embedded through a simple script, it hijacked visitor CPU resources to mine cryptocurrency for the site owner or a cyberattacker who injected it into compromised pages. Its success made drive by cryptomining a mainstream problem before the service shut down in early 2019, and its name still anchors a broader class of in browser miners.
