LockBit 3.0 (a.k.a. Black) is the flagship release of the LockBit ransomware, a brand that emerged in September 2019 and grew into one of the most prolific ransomware as a service operations in the world. Its affiliates compromise organizations through phishing, exposed services, and purchased access, exfiltrate data, and encrypt Windows, Linux, and ESXi systems, and the operation pioneered features such as a bug bounty program. An international takedown disrupted its infrastructure in 2024, and successor activity continues under affiliated brands.
